Cockle Bay School - Auckland, New Zealand

I loved the special opportunity I had to visit the Cockle Bay Primary School in Auckland and present Colour Our Story to the students there! It was especially delightful to see my special young friend Lexi proudly showing all her school friends her and her sister's drawings and stories that were included in the very first Colour Our Story book with Auckland and Melbourne which was later exchanged with @orphfund kids in Uganda.

“We decide to partner with Colour Our Story as a tool to hear from the children. We wanted to give them a voice and learn more about what they loved about Haiti. We also wanted to build their self-esteem by helping them to create something they could be proud of.”

We love collaborating with charities, organisations and groups like Gill’s and our dream at Colour Our Story is to lovingly create opportunities that inspire and empower a new generation of caring, curious global citizens.

A Colour Our Story drawing event was held at the remote OrphFund childrens’ home in Tombo, Sierra Leone (just outside of Freetown) thanks to Osman Turay - a very special, local carer for the kids there. We were put in touch via Facebook and I simply explained the concept to him. He fully loved and believed in our dream and vision and excitedly got to work collecting amazing drawings and stories from the kids which are now in the Sierra Leone colouring in book.

It was yet another ‘meant to be’ moment - coming to the South Island to housesit for a few weeks and then meeting this amazing primary school teacher and new friend Paula Cross. Not long after sharing the story behind Colour Our Story, she was keen to get the kids at the school involved. After more than a couple of weeks of solitude, I was gradually feeling more and more alone rather than the feelings of peace I felt at the beginning. But when I finally found myself surrounded by all the kids and teachers, it was just another wonderful reminder of how much love and hope is still alive when we choose to see it!

Once back in her hometown of Prague Jana asked the children in her class at Smarties School what it was they wanted to share with other young creatives around the world, particularly those on the west coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia where she volunteered with @fairnomad. Jana’s classroom enthusiastically got to work on their own creations and also enjoyed colouring in pages from the Indonesia book as well as previous Colour Our Story books from the global collection.

Sure, they had coloured in their fair share of colouring books but knowing that their own outline drawings with short stories were going into colouring books destined for OrphFund children in remote Kasese, Uganda to colour in was enough to get their imaginations buzzing as they thought about what they wanted to share with others on the other side of the world.

Auckland, New Zealand

It all started on a beautiful Auckland summers day under a few very special oak trees in Cornwall Park. I'd invited a few of my friends' children and my little niece to a bookmaking picnic and asked them to draw and write short stories that would be compiled into the very first Colour Our Story colouring book destined for 50+ young friends in Kasese, Uganda.
